Ron Landis Hobo Nickel Circa 1995

“Up for auction is a rare Proof-like hobo nickel carved by the Master Engraver Ron Landis. Ron Landis has recently stated he has no plans to carve any more coins for several years, so this represents a rare opportunity to acquire an early Ron Landis carving at a great price! This will be the last Ron Landis carving I have for sale, so bid like there may not be another for sale for awhile. :)

Carved in 1995, the obverse “indian” has been fully re-carved into the bust of a man with a Wicker Hat. The reverse is signed “RL 95″ and displays the number 105, denoting that this was his 105th carving. Coin was carved in 1995.” Click for more →

1919 Hobo Nickel “Skull” #1 by tmahr

” Hobo Nickel, Love Token, “Skull” #1, 1919 Buffalo Nickel, by tmahr 2014.
My first Hobo Skull.

The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. Starting in the early 20th century, the nickel, because of its size, thickness, and relative softness, was a favored coin for this purpose. However, the term hobo nickel is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations. In this case I’ve used a clad quarter for the copper nickel contrast in color and texture.

As a newer artist, I have tried to create different but respectful hobo nickels and love tokens.

Thank you for looking.” Click for more →

Hobo Nickel “Thomas the Tank Engine” by tmahr

“Hobo Nickel, 1946 S “Thomas the tank Engine” #3 Locomotive Railway/train memorabilia Nickel, by tmahr 2013

Probably the most recognized train engine in the world !

Created from a 1946 S brilliant uncirculated BU Jefferson nickel, the year the Thomas the Tank Engine book was first introduced and published (1946).

Hand carved and engraved, nice contrast with lots of fine line detail. I think this has very nice eye appeal. The locomotive is raised above the background with Thomas’s face being the highest point, deeply carved, high relief, very nice 3D effect.

The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The nickel, because of its size, thickness, and relative softness, was a favored coin for this purpose. However, the term hobo nickel is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations.

Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular among hobos, hence the name.

Thank you very much for looking.
