1937 Hobo Nickel “Making Waves” by Howard Thomas

Posted on August 7, 2017

“The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The US nickel coin was favored because of its size, thickness, and relative softness.

Howard Thomas has been carving hobo nickels for 8 years and doing scrimshaw for about 25.

This is a carved 1937 hobo nickel. The Japanese consider the Koi fish very good luck. We call this one “Making Waves”.” eBay Link
