1935 Hobo Nickel “The First Snow” by Howard Thomas

Posted on November 22, 2017

“The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The US nickel coin was favored because of its size, thickness, and relative softness.

Howard Thomas has been carving hobo nickels for 8 years and doing scrimshaw for about 25.

This is a carved 1935 hobo nickel. This young fox is snuggled in for his very first winter. We call it “The First Snow”!” Link
