1901 Hobo Nickel “Columbia” by tmahr

“Hobo Nickel, “America’s Cup Columbia”, 1901 Liberty Nickel, by tmahr 2014

Very nice contrast, high relief, the sail is brushed and is light, lighter than the photo seems to show. I think it has nice eye appeal, very pretty.

The 1901 America’s Cup was the 11th challenge for the Cup. It took place in the New York City harbor and consisted of a best of five series of races between the defender Columbia, entered by the New York Yacht Club for the second time, and Sir Thomas Lipton’s Shamrock II, representing the Royal Ulster Yacht Club. Columbia won all three races, the last being won with handicap, defending the cup.

Columbia, a fin keel sloop, was designed and built by Nathanael Herreshoff and the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company for owners J. Pierpont Morgan and Edwin Dennison Morgan of the New York Yacht Club. She was the third successful defender built by Herreshoff.

Columbia was selected in 1901 to defend the Cup, and again under the command of Charlie Barr, won all three races against Shamrock II. She was the first vessel to win the trophy twice in a row (a record not equaled until Intrepid’s back-to-back wins in 1967 and 1970.)

The “hobo nickel” is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The nickel, because of its size, thickness, and relative softness, was a favored coin for this purpose.

1902 Hobo Nickel “Jules Verne” by tmahr

“Hobo Nickel, love token , Jules Verne’s “From the Earth to the Moon”, 1902 V Nickel, by tom mahr

A whimsical Hobo nickel/ Love Token of the “Man in the Moon” . A tiny rendition from the Silent Movie “From the Earth to the Moon” showing the Man in the moon with the spaceship landed in his eye. The “Man in the Moon” is a light, almost white, matte, moon like surface, the background and clouds on the side are bright and polished. This does not show up in the photo very well, I think it has very nice eye appeal.

In 1868, Jules Verne published the book “From the Earth to the Moon”, which is considered the very “first” Science fiction novel. In 1902 the silent movie of the same name was produced and became the very first Science Fiction movie of all time. Jules Verne was very much a head of his times and although in the book and the movie had a gigantic cannon is used to launch the space ship, he got some of the details pretty close to being correct.
It is a true “classic” movie and an iconic image of the space ship in the eye of the irritated man in the moon. One of my favorite sci fi movie image.

Hand carved and engraved by tmahr in 2013. Striking, very nice eye appeal.

Created from a 1902 Liberty “V” Nickel, the year the Silent Movie was produced.

Offered with all due respect, in the true Hobo sense.” Click for more →

Hobo Nickel 1883-1912 “Edward Hopper” Sailboat #2 by tmahr

“Love Token / Hobo Nickel, “Edward Hopper” Sailboat #2, V-Nickel

Edward Hopper (July 22, 1882 – May 15, 1967) was a prominent American realist painter and printmaker. While he was most popularly known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching. Both in his urban and rural scenes, his spare and finely calculated renderings reflected his personal vision of modern American life.

The 1911 Long island Sound sailing painting is one of his most recognizable paintings. This is my miniature tribute to Hopper. The sailboat is raised above the background.

Nice eye appeal, decorative, bright with fine line detail and good contrast.

“Love Token, Hobo Nickel, Titanic , 1912 V Nickel, token by tom mahr

Hobo nickel / Token of the “Titanic in 1912.

Hand engraved in a scrimshaw style. A nice, bright, high lustre coin with lots of fine line detail. Created from a 1912 V nickel, the year of the Titanic’s first and only very sad voyage into history. I think it has very nice eye appeal.

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US.

This iconic symbol is offered with all due respect, in the true Hobo sense.” Click for more →
